Introduction:
On December 27, 2022, my family and I left France for an unforgettable journey to Barcelona. One of the highlights of our trip was visiting Sagrada Familia, a unique and stunning architectural masterpiece that left us in awe.
Arrival and Low Emission Zone Registration:
After arriving in Barcelona at 8:30 am, we had to stop by a filling station to buy some snacks and register for the Low Emission Zone. We were unaware of this requirement until three days before our trip. Thankfully, we were able to call the ZBE helpline and get our application approved manually.
First Impressions of Sagrada Familia:
We arrived at Sagrada Familia around noon and were immediately taken aback by its impressive and unique architectural design. The outside of the building features intricate and detailed facades that are adorned with religious symbols and sculptures, while the inside boasts high ceilings and stained glass windows that let in the sunlight and create a magical atmosphere.
Exploring the Outside and Inside of Sagrada Familia:
Sagrada Familia is a truly breathtaking piece of architecture, and exploring both the inside and outside is a must for any visitor to Barcelona. The church is a massive structure that towers above the surrounding buildings, making it visible from nearly any vantage point in the city. The first thing that stands out about Sagrada Familia is its unique combination of Gothic and Art Nouveau styles. Finally, the Glory facade, which faces the east and will be the main entrance once the church is completed, is currently under construction.
The interior of Sagrada Familia is just as impressive as the outside. The high ceilings and colorful stained glass windows create a truly magical atmosphere that is unlike any other church or cathedral that I have even been to. The columns that support the ceiling are designed to resemble trees, giving the impression that you are walking through a forest. The nave is also home to a series of stunning stained glass windows that are arranged in a rainbow pattern, letting in a beautiful spectrum of light.
One of the highlights of our visit to Sagrada Familia was climbing to the top of the Nativity Tower. The tower offers stunning views of the city and is also home to a museum that showcases the history of the church and its construction. The climb to the top of the tower is not for the faint of heart, as the stairs are narrow and winding, but the view from the top is well worth it.
Tips for Visitors:
If you’re planning on visiting Sagrada Familia, be sure to buy your tickets online in advance to avoid long queues. Additionally, plan to spend at least two hours exploring the church, as there is much to see and appreciate. Finally, make sure to dress appropriately, as it is a religious site and visitors are expected to dress modestly.

And speaking of the ceiling, it was one of the most stunning things I’ve ever seen. The intricate patterns and colors seem to dance across the surface, casting a warm glow over the entire space.
As I made my way around the church, I couldn’t help but notice the subtle nods to nature that were woven throughout the design. From the tree-like columns to the colors and patterns on the ceiling, everything seemed to be inspired by the natural world. It was as if Gaudi had taken the beauty of the world around us and distilled it down into its most essential elements, creating a space that felt both familiar and otherworldly at the same time.
If you’re planning a trip to Barcelona, I highly recommend making a stop at the Sagrada Familia. But be warned: the lines can get quite long, so just like I’ve mentioned above, I suggest buying your tickets online in advance to avoid the wait. And don’t forget to give yourself plenty of time to explore the space – there’s so much to see and take in that you’ll want to give yourself as much time as possible.
